Up The Hill And Down The Slope

The Loft

I came across this song thanks to an issue of Mojo magazine. If you can afford it I highly recommend subscribing to Mojo (I only indulge buying single issues on occasion) because with every issue comes a mix CD with all sorts of musical treats ^_^

Hey, Soul Sister

by Train

My sister sent me this one quite a while ago during one of our long distance music exchanges. Catchy tune don't you think?

Rollin' and Tumblin'

by Cream

Rollin' and Tumblin' has been recorded by many many different artists and Cream does a great job (duh!). I'd like to thank whoever created this music (Muddy Waters or maybe Hambone Willie Newbern) whoever it was a million thanks for the awesomeness ^_^

*this isn't the Cream version I have, I have the BBC sessions version on my iPod

Breakfat at Tiffany's

by Deep Blue Something

Whenever my sister and I randomly start belting out a song it is often this one, it's such a catchy tune and the chorus is great. Note, to any prospective boyfriends I don't like Breakfast at Tiffany's (have you seen Mickey Rooney's horrible performance?!?!?!?!?! Hepburn is lovely but.... 0_O) so if you like it that ain't somethin' we'll have in common =P ;)

Milord

by Edith Piaf

the following video is of Edith Piaf performing "Milord" on the Ed Sullivan Show.

Lowlands of Holland

performed by Norma Waterson and Martin and Eliza Carthy

This song is about a young man who is impressed by the British Navy on his wedding night must go to Holland (or possibly Dutch colonies or Australia [once known as New Holland]).

I was supposed to go to the Netherlands earlier this summer but due to overbooked flights I was only able to go to Paris (still pretty awesome ^_^). Hopefully I'll be able to go next year and I'll play this on my iPod while I'm there

As Long as We Beat the English

by The Stereophonics

Here's one for those of you who like rugby (specifically the Welsh Rugby team)

The Rainbow Connection

from "The Muppet Movie" sung by Kermit the Frog

I remember that occasionally my best friend's dad, a giant of a man who must be 6'5" or taller with a very deep voice, would start singing this song ^_^

Here's an extra treat for those of you who watch The Office (U.S. version)

The Draft Dodger Rag

sung by Pete Seeger

Every time I got phone calls from Army recruiters I was tempted to start singing this song especially the parts about the physical ailments since I'm not a very fine specimen of the human species (allergies, lactose intolerance, bad eyesight, messed up knees, weak ankles, high arches, screwy back and shoulders, and just pathetically weak in general) definitely not what the US Armed Forces are looking for ;-)

Her Morning Elegance

by Oren Lavie

Here's another song I have thanks to my sister Liz. A lovely song and a beautiful music video ^_^

Ol' Man River from "Showboat" (1936)

sung by Paul Robeson (top) and William Warfield (bottom)

I'm rather picky when it comes to musicals and I don't like this"Showboat" or the remake made in the 50s but I love the music especially this beautiful and bittersweet song. Robeson is a gifted singer but I prefer the way it is sung by William Warfield in the 50s film which can be seen on clip at the bottom of this post

Pero Raquel

by Leo Dan

I remember one of my dad's friends singing this just about every time he saw me (b/c my name is... Raquel! ^_^)

Here are the lyrics in English (not a literal translation, just trying to get the meaning across)

Oh Raquel
Raquel let me go out
Don't be cruel Raquel
Don't be cruel my Raquelita (little Raquel)
(repeat)

When she met my girlfriend
Raquel pulled a face
and she told me
not to stay out late

(chorus 2x)

She treats me like I'm a baby
I don't like it at all
You've got to understand me
Dearest Raquelita

(chorus 2x)

All the guys are in love
In love with Raqueluchita*
But she won't let me have
one little girlfriend

(chorus 2x)

*another endearment for the name Raquel, one that my dad uses on occasion ;-)
