I first heard this melancholy piece while watching "The War" (a Ken Burns Documentary on WWII) and it instantly tied with Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings as one of the most bittersweet pieces of music I have ever heard and it nearly always moves me to tears.

You know those annoying TimeLife infomercials that are on TV all the time? Well thats how I first heard this song and when I found the CD (yes back in the day when people still bought CDs) I had to buy it. My bff Amanda and I used to sing this song all the time. This song also introduced me to the world of Country music, a world inhabited by the likes of Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, Billy Walker, Claude King, Flatt & Scruggs, Bobby Bare, the Kingston Trio, Jimmy Dean and the Charlie Daniels Band.
