I love ballads and folk songs because of the stories they tell. This song tells the tragic story of the Galveston Hurricane of 1900. On September 8, 1900 a hurricane with estimated winds of 135 mph (217 kmh) made landfall on Galveston and would lead to an estimated 8,000 deaths. To this day the Galveston Hurricane is the deadliest natural disaster to occur in the United States.
